Water-Based Work 2013
After a 4-month residency in Switzerland in the winter and early spring of 2013, I returned to New York. At this time I still did not have a separate workspace of my own. But to my good fortune, Nicole again offered me her D.U.M.B.O. workspace for the summer. Here I picked up with my watercolor rhythms of the previous year. In the two locations, I produced more than 70 images on 22 x 30 inch 300 lb. Arches hot press paper.
Of the above watercolors, the first two (left and center-left; on mobile phones, the top two) I made in Switzerland. They were something of a challenge in my little chalet-house workspace. What made it particularly difficult was a rather chilly space cluttered with many working pieces. The second two (center-right and right; on mobile phones, the bottom two) I made in New York. By this latter time, I was becoming more technically proficient at effectively controlling the medium. But, as with most of my watercolors, this notion of control is still somewhat limited and arbitrary. I know what the medium can do most of the time; and I usually know what to expect. Yet a lack of control can be good for achieving some of the most desirable characteristics: those unexpectedly magical happenings.
