Oil-Based Work 2017

By 2017 I had gained a new momentum in my painting. This was partly on account of a new workspace in Brooklyn (directly above my Carroll Gardens apartment). I actually began in this space in late 2015. But with travels, an art-residency and other activities in 2016, it would take more than a year to find a good working rhythm. Once settled in, it was by all accounts a fairly productive year for both painting and sculpture.

The above paintings actually took shape after a memorable trip to India earlier in the year. Perhaps most striking for me in that place was an intensity of sensations in the towns and temples we visited. It was as if a brilliantly colorful aspect of a spiritual imagery presented itself to me, nestled within a most profound darkness of existence. Perhaps this may be why India retains such an enduring appeal for me. So many of its general qualities remind me of my art. At the same time, I know that my work has a unique character and intensity of its own.
