Oil-Based Work 2016

In the winter of 2016 I spent another 2 months in Switzerland, working mostly in oil. It would be my last session in the wonderful little “chalet” house which had been my workspace for about 3 years. By this time the technical features of my work had changed considerably.  After all the “orderly” brushwork of the previous year, I opted now for a “looser” brush style. And the imagery was also beginning to broaden a bit, at least for my oil works. Thickly applied paint, sometimes wet-on-wet, was also a marked departure from the earlier works. The imagery of the above paintings developed out of rougher painted “sketches” on wood panels. Final pieces on linen were not, however, simply reproductions of a sketch. Rather, they were a kind of progressive development from an earlier realization (like a sculpture from emerging from a suggestive drawing).
